Proton credits and gift cards
Credits are digital vouchers that can be used toward a Proton subscription. You can add credits directly to your account or buy a gift card for someone else.
If you switch from one paid Proton subscription to another, any unused days on your old plan are converted to credits and discounted from the cost of your new plan.

How to buy credits
- Sign in to account.proton.me.
- Open your subscription settings (go to Settings ⚙️ → All settings, then select Subscription from the sidebar).
- Scroll to Credits and click Add credits.
- Select how many credits you’d like to add, select a payment method, and enter your payment details. Click Top up to confirm.
- If you’ve never had a paid subscription, you can select a currency. But please be aware that credits can only be applied to payments in the same currency. If you’ve had a paid subscription before, the currency for buying credits is set to match the currency you paid in.
If you pay by Bitcoin, bank transfer, or cash, credits will be added to your account once we receive your payment. Learn how to pay with these payment methods
You’re all done. Your credits will automatically be applied to your next subscription payment. If you’d like to use credits to settle an unpaid invoice, you’ll need to apply your credits to the invoice manually.
How to check your credit balance
- Sign in to account.proton.me.
- Open your subscription settings (go to Settings ⚙️ → All settings, then select Subscription from the sidebar).
- Scroll to Credits. You’ll see your balance under Available credits.
Gift cards
Gift cards are digital vouchers. You can buy them for other people or add them to your own credit balance. Gift cards are available on the Proton Shop(nouvelle fenêtre).
How to buy gift cards
1. Visit the Proton Shop(nouvelle fenêtre) and select a Proton Gift Card.
2. Select the Quantity of cards you’d like to purchase, then click Add to cart. Now select Check out to pay using any of our supported payment methods, or PayPal for quick checkout.
3. Select a payment method and fill in your payment details.
4. Once purchased, you’ll see your gift code on the order confirmation page after a few seconds. You’ll also receive an email from shop@orders.proton.me that includes a link to your codes.
How to redeem a gift card, discount code, or coupon
There are two ways to use a Proton gift card or discount code:
- Top up your credit balance
This will convert the value of your code into Proton credits, which will be automatically applied to your next purchase or subscription payment.
- Open your subscription settings (go to Settings ⚙️ → All settings, then select Subscription from the sidebar).
- Scroll to Gift code. Enter your code and click Submit.
- Apply your code to a purchase
You can also apply your gift card to a purchase.
- At checkout, click Add a gift code (you’ll see this under the Summary sidebar, below the Confirm button).
- Enter your gift code and click Apply.
What is proration?
When you switch from one paid Proton subscription to another, we end your old plan and start your new one immediately. To make sure you don’t pay twice, we turn any unused time on your old plan into credits which are automatically applied to the cost of your new plan.
This amount will appear in your payment summary under Proration.
You won’t get prorated credits when you cancel your subscription (downgrade to Proton Free). That’s because your paid subscription doesn’t end early — it expires at the end of your billing period.
How prorated credits are calculated
(cost of plan / total number of days in plan) x (number of days remaining)
Example: You’re switching from Proton Family (1 month) to Proton Unlimited – 12 months.
You paid €29.99 /month for Proton Family – 1 month, and you had 28 days left on your current subscription. So we discount €28 (€29.99/30×28 = €28) from your new subscription payment.
How are credits and gift cards calculated at checkout?
Let’s look at how account credits, proration, and gift cards work in practice.
In this example, Eric Norbert is upgrading from Proton Mail Plus (12 months, €47.88) to Proton Unlimited (12 months, €119.88). He has:
- 20€ in account credits
- a €15 gift card to redeem
- 100 days left on his Mail Plus plan (these unused days will be converted into a proration)
Here’s how his price would be calculated:
[new plan price] – [credits] – [gift card] – [proration*]
119.88 EUR – 15 EUR – 20 EUR – 13.12 EUR = 71.76 EUR.
