The Proton Drive roadmap
Newly released features, key improvements, and fixes — plus a look at what's next for your end-to-end encrypted cloud storage experience.
Spring/summer 2026 roadmap
Our product roadmap for the first half of 2026 includes new features and improvements throughout the Proton ecosystem.
Introducing Proton Drive CLI
Use Proton Drive CLI directly from your terminal on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Built on the same Proton Drive SDK that powers all Drive apps, the CLI lets you upload and download files, manage folders, handle sharing and invitations, and automate Drive workflows from scripts, backup jobs, or cron.
We rebuilt Proton Drive, and it's now up to 3x faster everywhere
We rebuilt the Proton Drive SDK, a shared engine that now powers all Proton Drive apps across iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and web. Uploads are up to 3x faster and downloads up to 2x faster across all platforms. The overall app experience is noticeably smoother and more seamless. The SDK is also enabling deeper integration across the Proton ecosystem
A cryptographic update makes encryption up to 4x faster
Proton Drive now uses an updated OpenPGP encryption scheme (v6 PKESK + v2 SEIPD) that enables AES-GCM hardware acceleration on modern devices. With this cryptography update, encrypting an HD movie or 1,000 high-resolution photos is much faster: about 30 seconds on a phone and 3 seconds on a fast desktop, down from roughly 90 seconds and 12 seconds, respectively.
Proton Drive on macOS is now faster
As a result of our ongoing SDK work, Proton Drive on macOS is noticeably faster and lighter(new window). Downloads are 65% faster and uploads 15% faster, and the app now uses less RAM and CPU
Photos on web load faster
Faster photo loading on web is another result of our SDK work. See the difference(new window).
Currency and date localization in Proton Sheets
Sheets supports localization. Select your country from Settings to automatically set the right currency and date format by default. This makes cross-border work much smoother, whether you're budgeting in euros for a French client or simply want your spreadsheets to display dates the way you're used to.
Faster uploads and downloads for shared files
Accessing a large presentation someone shared with you or storing files in a colleague's shared folder got noticeably quicker. Shared files on Proton Drive download 70% faster, and uploads to shared folders are 30% faster, even if you don't have a Proton account.
Scan and save documents on Android
Proton Drive for Android lets you scan paper documents directly in the app, saving them as encrypted PDFs that are securely stored and easy to access or share. Everyday admin tasks, like digitizing a passport for a visa application or backing up important medical records, are simpler and more secure.
General updates and fixes to Proton Sheets
- ODS import and export (beta): Open and edit ODS files from Proton Drive, or download any spreadsheet as ODS (compatible with OpenOffice, LibreOffice, and others).
- Better XLSX handling: A custom-built Microsoft Excel parser/writer fixes export issues, including broken charts, and improves overall import and conversion quality.
- Formula and shortcut fixes: Resolved bugs in IFERROR, SUBSTITUTE, FIXED, and DATEDIF, fixed Cmd + D (Ctrl + D) and Cmd + R (Ctrl + R) with multiple cells selected, corrected relative references when filling down, and fixed data ranges in functions like =DAY(A:A).
- Improved input and formatting: Better IME support for Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, more consistent merging behavior, and plaintext values no longer disappear when dragged.
- Still coming: Locales with automatic defaults, custom number/currency/date patterns, and more paste special options.
Save files directly to Proton Drive on iOS
You can now save files directly to Proton Drive on iOS, eliminating the hassle of downloading a file just to reupload it. It's a small change that saves a lot of time.
An update on the Proton Drive SDK
We've rebuilt Proton Drive's core file operations into a shared SDK that delivers up to 60% faster uploads on iOS, 30% faster uploads and 70% faster downloads on web, and better reliability on unstable networks. With all Drive apps running on this common foundation instead of separate implementations, the road ahead includes more performance updates, hardware-accelerated encryption, CLI tools for developers, and ultimately a Linux client.
Upload entire folders to Proton Drive on Android
Android users can upload entire folders to Proton Drive in one go — something even Google Drive doesn't offer. Back up a project folder before switching devices, move your whole photo collection into secure storage, or upload a client's documents in a single tap instead of file by file.
Faster gallery load time on mobile
The Proton Drive mobile gallery loads significantly faster on Android and iOS, so you can spend less time waiting for your photos to appear and quickly find the one you need — whether you're searching for a receipt on the go or sharing a memory with a friend.
Proton's autumn/winter 2025 roadmap
As a community-supported organization, we believe you should also know how we're following through on our commitments. Here's what we committed to in the autumn and winter of 2025.
Keep your files safe and private
Proton Drive is end-to-end encrypted cloud storage that ensures no one but you and the people you choose can access your files. Not even Proton.
